The Slash-D-Three herd was established
in 1985 with a group of heifers purchased from Lorrayne Byers at the Twin Canyon
Ranch, located in the high and rough country of north central New Mexico, where
extreme hardiness and efficiency are the very keys to survival. All of the
heifers carried the Chinook 605 (Ankonian Dynamo son) bloodline. We bred
these heifers to a "PBC D0202" line bull, thereby forming a herd carrying
the very foundations lines of the Red Angus breed.
Our goal is to provide the commercial breeder with proven genetics to improve
the quality of his herd at a reasonable expense. While we strive to
improve growth, we will not sacrifice the all-important maternal and functional
values. Our calves are not creep fed or implanted. Experience and
buyer feedback have taught us that correct structure, feed efficiency, and
outstanding maternal values are what really works in the harsh southwest environment.
Occasionally we exhibit our
cattle at livestock shows because we enjoy showing them off to visitors and
educating those visitors on the benefits of Red Angus, and we enthusiastically
promote youth involvement with Red Angus. Our cattle are presented with
natural hair coats -- winter or summer. We do not subscribe to the
practice of disguising conformation faults under extreme and trained hair.
You won't find new fads or trendy clichés here - just honest working cattle
with balanced EPDs. Our environment requires cattle with strong legs and
feet -- they often have to walk miles to water. Even our show champions
are not kept on a long-term show string or on a stud farm -- we "fluff" them up
for about a month prior to the show and kick them right back out to pasture
afterward!
In our meat sales program we focus on the end product -- what goes on the plate!
While the show ring apparently centers attention on hair and the round, we
concentrate on length & thickness of the rib and loin. Our steers
consistently dress above 62% and yield tender, highly palatable cuts. Even the most skeptical meat customers are so pleased with their Red Angus beef that
they return to place advance orders for the following year.
Performance is high on our list of priorities.
We helped to introduce a Production Steer Contest at our county fair, which
is judged on ADG over a 120-day period; ultrasound measuring
back fat, rib eye, & IMF; and on visual appraisal by three industry
representatives. For three years in a row Red Angus steers with /D3 bloodlines captured
the top slots, with each gaining over four pounds per day.. To be honest, they didn't place well in the
open "pretty steer" show (they weren't hairy & fluffy) but they excelled where
it matters most -- the end product!
The majority of our sales is to "repeat"
buyers or new customers referred by past buyers
THAT'S THE /D3 ADVANTAGE!!!
